Firstly it was a mountain biking section on forest trails, stopping every now and then to punch the control cards with the orienteering punches that were located along the route, the bikes were then deposited and competitors changed into their running shoes for the first running section of the day. The running was boggy under foot but good route choices meant that errors were kept to minimum and Rowan and Paul were well placed after the run.
A mountain bike section then took competitors to the kayaking stage which was on a sheltered reservoir, so keeping the Kayak in a straight line proved not too difficult!! From there it was onto special task number 3 which was an orienteering section around the mountain beside the Reservoir. After that it was back on the bikes for a dash to the finish line taking in the last two special tasks (a rope traverse and a crawl through a culvert) and the last few markers.
Rowan and Paul came in second place with only one minute separating them and those in first place. There was less than ten minutes separating the top four teams which means that the rest of the series will be interesting – provided they can keep the fitness levels up!!
